How to Compete

Start Dreaming of the Future!

The 2011 Dream.Build.Play Challenge is now complete. But it’s never too early to start dreaming of new ideas to bring to life for the 2012 Challenge. Check out the details below to learn how to compete.

1. Register

Registering creates your online account, which you’ll need for everything from creating or joining a team to submitting your game. (Don’t worry if you haven’t decided on a team or game idea yet. You can figure out the details after you register.)

2. Check Your Toolkit

One specific technology must be a part of your toolkit if you wish to compete in the Dream.Build.Play Challenge:

XNA Game Studio 4.0
You must design your game for Xbox 360, which means your game has to be built in C# using XNA Game Studio 4.0. Native code won’t work with XNA Game Studio on the Xbox 360 platform.
Download XNA Game Studio 4.0

3. Create Your Game

Design and develop an original, playable game for Xbox 360 using XNA Game Studio 4.0. Keep our judging criteria in mind as you build your game. We’re looking for action and adventure, fun and excitement, innovation and originality – so do NOT hold yourself back!

Note: we’d prefer that you develop a game specifically for this contest. However, if you use pre-existing source code, make sure to identify it as such in your description when you submit your game. Also, be sure to use the code in line with applicable licensing and use terms. Do not infringe on third-party rights.

4. Submit Your Masterpiece

Each game submission must include:

a)
A completed entry form

b)
Game File: Submit the .ccgame package for your game in a playable ZIP file. Max install file size: 150MB. Do not submit your source code!

c)
Game Synopsis: Create a game synopsis that includes:
  • Game title. Make it original and memorable (30 characters max)
  • Game description. Tell us about your game in 10,000 characters or less. English only, please.
  • Up to 3 screenshots. Capture the action and unique style of your game as accurately as possible, showing only finished artwork and graphics. JPEGs only, 2MB max each.

d)
Game Video. Create a video of your game and upload it to the video service website of your choice. Then cut and paste the website link into your Dream.Build.Play entry form.

5. Let the Judging Begin

After the entry period closes, our judges will review the entries and choose their top 20 favorites. These favorites will be posted on this website in late August 2011.

The final step? The judges will choose the final four prize-winning games, which will also be posted on this website in late August 2011.
